Ces dernières années, la planche à voile de vitesse a eu un grand impact sur l'histoire de la planche à voile. Avec le canal de Lüderitz en Namibie, les records de vitesse ont augmenté d'environ 5 nœuds. Lors d'une des tentatives de record, Patrik Diethelm a réalisé le meilleur résultat de l'événement avec un temps de 51,18 nœuds.
« Juste pour le plaisir, j’ai emprunté la voile 6.3 d’un autre rider et j’ai eu du mal à démarrer dans le vent léger. J’étais content de réussir à passer le premier virage en descendant. La descente semblait lente et presque ennuyeuse et j’étais content d’atteindre l’arrivée sans m’arrêter. Voilà mes impressions pendant la descente. Après avoir reçu le chronométrage officiel de 48,77 nœuds, je n’arrivais pas à le croire. Depuis lors, j’ai plein d’idées sur la manière de concevoir un équipement de vitesse encore plus rapide. »

Bien qu'il n'ait pas battu lui-même le record du monde, son résultat le plus remarquable a été ses 48,77 nœuds dans des conditions de vent marginales, autour de 25 nœuds, avec une voile de plus de 6 mètres carrés.
In the past couple of years Speed Windsurfing had a big impact on windsurfing history. With the Luderitz canal in Namibia, the overall speed times went up by about 5 knots. In one of the record attempts, Patrik Diethelm scored the best result of the event with a time of 51.18 Knots.
Even though he didn’t break the world record himself his most eye-opening result were his 48.77 knots in marginal wind speed around 25 knots on an over 6 sqm. sail. Patrik Diethelm: “Just for fun I borrowed another rider's 6.3 and could barely start in the light winds. I was happy making it dowwind around the first corner. The run felt slow and almost boring and I was happy to reach the finish without stopping. So far my feelings during the run. After getting the official timing of 48.77 knts I could not believe it. Since then I have bright ideas on how to design faster speed equipment."

SHAPE
SCOOP ROCKER LINE
A board nose as low as possible to maintain the flattest rocker curves, which reduce water and air friction to an absolute minimum.
OUTLINE
Narrow in the tail to minimise the wetted surface area for maximum speeds and a forward wide point for early planing and control. Not too short in length to enable early planing and to allow the rider to use the smallest board possible. Also not too long to optimise aerodynamics and improve control.
BOTTOM SHAPE
Slight V with double concave and side flats in the nose area and under the mast track for a smoother ride. Slight flat V in the tail area for maximum acceleration, speed and control.
DECK SHAPE
An extreme S-deck shape with a low back foot area, high front foot area and a lowered mast track position to provide the most comfortable and controlled downwind sailing position.
RAIL SHAPE
Thin at the nose and at the mid section to reduce weight. Very boxy rails at the front strap prevent water sucking up the rail and allow the rider to stand tall. Thin and low rails at the back foot enable the rider to to stand lower and have the best water release which results in better top speeds.
SUMMARY
